Lifters Lose Sleep over Online Youth World Cup Schedule

Oct 28 2020

The preliminary competition schedule hasn’t been kind to Australia’s entrants in the IWF Online Youth World Cup. Although the event will be conducted over the internet, the time difference between Australia and the host nation of Peru means that four out of the five young athletes representing Australia will be lifting at a time that they would normally be sound asleep. In fact, the calendar will flip over from Monday to Tuesday between Maddison Power’s weigh-in and the start of her competition session.

Such are the challenges of uniting the weightlifting world in a face(time)-to-face(time) competition during a global pandemic that has all but halted international travel. The IWF and the Online Youth World Cup Organising Committee are to be commended for their commitment to the next generation of champions. Let’s hope that our young Aussie lifters can rise to the occasion and do their best in the closest thing to a World Championship that we will see in 2020.
